  • Jenelle Monáe

    Jenelle Monáe

Jenelle Monáe, The Warfield, San Francisco, 9/18/2014 I had the good fortune to shoot REDF 2014 Fundraising gala at The Warfield in San Francisco. REDF in an organization that builds social enterprises that employ those who have the toughest time getting a job. The highlight of the evening was a concert by Janelle Monáe and I happened to be one the very few photographers there. The audience wasn't your normal concert goers so they sat and stood back from the stage so I basically had her all to myself for the first 3 songs. She also always performs in spotlight so this was one of the easiest shoots for me. She's also one firecracker of a performer!

    Mike Patton, Faith No More

10/25/2015 Aftershock Festival, Sacramento Headliner for the 2nd day of Aftershock festival was Faith No More. After some years of other projects the band has really activated recently and with the new album, Sol Invictus, they have toured quite extensively. The band has always been leaning towards avant garde and the floral arrangements on the otherwise sterile white stage setup is definitely one more weirdness from them. But when it works it works. Faith No More is again powerhouse in music and I'm glad that they are.

Kerry King of Slayer, San Jose State Event Center, San Jose, 10/31/2013 Slayer has been one of the most influencial bands in my and other metalheads lifes. This is actually my first time seeing them live and had the privilege to shoot them also. Slayer was on tour with 4arm and Gojira, also my favorites and I just couldn't let this opportunity go by. The lighting was challenging but I managed to get few decent shots of all bands.

I was shooting 10th annual Live 105 BFD at Mt View and got to shoot M.I.A very close up. The photo pit is right up to the stage and the stage is relatively slow so us photographers are literally on the stage when shooting. It was a tough day with 17 bands to shoot and I still missed all the action on the Local Band Stage. Festivals like this are great to get a lot of big names in, but for wire photographer like me it's a long day. I left home around 10AM and was back around 10PM. After this I have to edit photos within 12 hours and upload to wire service. I got around 150 photos edited and uploaded by 2AM, just in time to go and sleep a little.

3/8/2019 Palace of FIne Arts, San Francisco Two firsts on the same night. I have never shot at Palace of Fine Arts and this was my first time seeing Billy Idol with a camera on me. Billy was performing with just his guitarists Steve Stevens and the show was awesoem. Billy talked a lot between the songs and even thought the venue is quite big the night had an intimate feeling to it. It was great to cross one more big name form my photography bucket list.

8/12/2017, Outside Lands Festival, San Francisco I was lucky enough to be called again to shoot Outside Lands Festival in Golden Gate park in San Francisco. Being a house photographer allows us some more access to the performances than we usually get. You get to stay longer in the photo pit and with some performances, you get to shoot from the stage also. This allows you to get more angles to the show and you get to capture moments that other photographers don't necessarily get to shoot. Working on a festival is physically demanding. During the 3 day festival, I walked more than 30 miles over more than 25 hours. The good part of this festival is that I get to go home every night and since I was shooting for the festival, we had editors on site and I didn't have to stay up all night to edit and submit my photos.

    Marilyn Manson

10/24/2015 Aftershock Festival, Sacramento Marilyn manson has been a stable performer in the metal curcuit for quite a while now. He's still a big draw and this was my first time seeing and shooting him. He performed on the first night of Aftershock festival in Sacramento. The performance was towards the end of a long day and the heat, dust and walking definitely tested the stamina of all photographers. I managed to shoot 10 bands on the first day and with some problems with internet access in the hotel only managed to get to sleep around 3 in the morning. I still wouldn't change this job for anything!

Another year of metal in Sacramento. Aftershock is always my last festival for the year and it keeps getting better every year. This time around the bain acts were Nine Inch Nails and Ozzy Osbourne. Unfortunately as I shoot for wire service, I could't shoot the main acts, but there were plenty of awesomeness to go around. My personalo favorites this year were Mastodon, Gojira, Halestorm and Black Map
